Dr. Sara Runnels has been practicing oral and maxillofacial surgery in the Boston Area since 2003. Born and raised in Maine, she received her undergraduate degree from Boston College in 1993. Dr. Runnels graduated Magna Cum Laude from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 1997. She completed a six-year residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City in 2003. During her residency, Dr. Runnels also received her medical degree from Columbia University.
Dr. Runnels is a board certified, diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is a fellow of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiologists. She is an active member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Association and the American Medical Association.
In addition to being a full time partner in the practice, Dr. Runnels is also a member of the surgical staff at the Caritas Norwood Hospital and Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
Dr. Runnels is an active volunteer surgeon with the groups “Healing the Children” and “The Smile Train” which provide surgical care to children and adults in underprivileged areas with cleft and other craniofacial abnormalities.
Dr. Runnels was recently selected by the Massachusetts Dental Society as one of 2006’s “Ten Under Ten” Dentists, which honors dentists in practice less than ten years who have made outstanding contributions to the dental profession and their community. She also received a certificate of recognition from the American Dental Association for meritorious service to the people of Colombia.
Dr. Runnels and her husband reside in Needham with her husband and daughter. Her other interests include running, biking, scuba diving, reading, and traveling.
